Replacing the cutting head is one of the most delicate operations on a fibre laser system.
To replace it, the connector of the delivery optical fibre has to be disconnected: this is the point through which all the power of the source passes. BST Engineering is specialised in cutting head replacement support and follows the job from disassembly to cutting tests, on both MicroStep systems and those of other manufacturers.
Before reconnecting the fibre, we inspect its end face with a microscope dedicated to laser optical fibre inspection.
The instrument magnifies the face of the connector and displays it on a monitor. This lets us see dust, residues, scratches or burn marks that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Under the laser beam, even minimal contamination absorbs energy and overheats. The result can be damage to the fibre, the head or, in the worst cases, the source, which are among the most expensive components of the system.
For us it is a necessary step, but not every maintenance provider can offer it, because it requires specific instruments that are not part of standard service equipment.
For you, it means restarting the machine knowing that the fibre is intact and clean, without discovering a problem only after the first cuts.
