Which cut: plasma, oxy-fuel or laser?

Plasma cutting

Plasma cutting is one of the most widely used technologies in sheet metal processing.

A gas passes through a nozzle and, on contact with an electric arc, turns into plasma. The plasma reaches extremely high temperatures and melts the metal at the cutting point, while the gas flow blows away the molten material and leaves a clean edge.

Depending on the power source and the material, plasma cuts plates up to 50 mm and easily combines with drilling, pipe cutting and marking. It requires little maintenance, usually one service a year, and offers an excellent price/quality ratio.

It is fast, precise and cost-effective.

Oxy-fuel cutting

Oxy-fuel cutting, also known as flame cutting, is the go-to technology for cutting very thick steel plates.
A flame brings the metal to its ignition temperature and a jet of pure oxygen oxidises and expels it, opening the kerf. It is ideal for carbon and low-alloy steels and, with the most powerful MicroStep systems, reaches up to 500 mm in thickness, where plasma and laser cannot go. That is why it is widely used in heavy steel fabrication and shipbuilding. The investment is contained, quality stays consistent across every thickness and several torches can work together, so productivity increases.

Tilting heads also perform bevel cuts, with edges ready for welding, and on the same CNC machine you can add plasma to cover the full range of thicknesses.

Laser cutting

Laser cutting is the ideal technology when you need maximum precision and perfect finishes.

A concentrated beam of light, focused on a spot a fraction of a millimetre wide, melts or vaporises the metal along the path and leaves a thin, clean cut. With a fibre laser you can process steel, stainless steel, aluminium, galvanised steel, copper and brass with tolerances in the order of ±0.1 mm, even on complex contours and with minimal material waste. Parts come out ready for the next processing steps, with no burrs to remove.

Compared with CO2, the fibre laser uses less energy and, with automatic loading and unloading systems, it works continuously and increases productivity.
